NWS Forecaster Discussion

Area forecast discussion...updated
National Weather Service Eureka California
935 PM PST sun Feb 12 2012

Synopsis...a front will move across the region this evening
spreading rain...and snow to elevations above 3500 feet tonight.
Scattered rain and snow showers will linger on Monday as an upper
trough moves overhead.

&&

Update...snow has been reported by several spotters in Trinity
County down to 1700 feet (but with temperatures at or above 35 degrees). Have updated
the forecast to include snow mention down to 1500 feet...but accumulations
should be light as it will take a while for temperatures to fall enough to
snow to start sticking (especially on the roads). Otherwise...rain
will continue overnight as an upper level low moves over northwest
California...which is currently portrayed nicely in the forecast. Jca

-----------------------previous discussion----------------------

Discussion...first weather concern centers around tonights frontal
passage and how low snow levels will eventually fall. At this time
snow levels are fairly high (4k to 5k) and with plenty of middle and
high clouds present do not anticipate significant drop tonight. By
sunrise snow levels will likely be closer to 3000 feet and locally as
low as 2500 but precipitation will be spotty by then. Isolated to scattered
showers expected during the remainder of the day on Monday...tapering
off through Tuesday as the trough aloft passes. Next challenge is on
Tuesday night into Wednesday due to another (even colder) upper low
which models are in good agreement on moving north to south across
the County Warning Area. This one will be a bit trickier since it passes through
during the night and early morning hours. Forecast models keep this
this system quite dry with very little to no quantitative precipitation forecast but 700t and thickness
suggests any precipitation that falls will be snow to perhaps 1500-2000 feet
by Wednesday morning. Another light rain producing system arrives on
Saturday followed by a stronger ridge of high pressure expected late
in the weekend and next week.

&&

Aviation...cold front approaching the coast is bringing some
light rain showers to the coast. This will gradually spread inland
tonight as the cold front pushes across the area. Conditions are
mainly VFR as as of 3pm. As the rain gets heavier this evening
expect periods of MVFR conditions. The front is expected to cross
the area around midnight tonight. Behind the front showers are
expected. Gusty winds and brief periods of MVFR conditions are
likely with these showers...although there will be breaks in
between showers. Showers are expected to persist through the day
tomorrow before tapering off in the evening. Mkk

&&

Marine...light southerly winds are in place across much of the
waters currently ahead of a cold front. Winds are expected to
become northwest and increase to near gale to gale force by
midnight.

A northwest swell around 10 feet is currently in place across the
waters. This will stay nearly steady through the night. Steep
short period wind waves will dominate tomorrow so combined the
seas into one wave group. Combined seas will peak around 16 feet.

Monday night winds will decrease as the high pressure weakens. At
the same time a longer period swell begins to move into the area
at around 12 feet at 15 seconds.

Tuesday into Wednesday models show an area of low pressure moving
across the region. For the past several days models have been
very inconsistent with each other and run to run. This morning
most models finally came into better agreement bringing an inside
slider low down across northern California. However the 18z runs of GFS
and NAM now show it coming in slower and farther east so
confidence remains low. High pressure looks to build back in
behind this system until Friday when another system is pronged to
move through...although models dont agree where it will be
located. Mkk
