NWS Forecaster Discussion

Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service Tallahassee Florida
1010 am EDT Wed may 16 2012

Discussion...it appears that tuesday's 12 UTC run of the local 4km
workstation WRF was the only model that had a good handle on the
widespread convection which formed in NE Gulf of Mexico late last
night and early this morning. This prompted this issuance of several
smws and a few spss, along with a confirmed peak wind of 34 kts at
Keaton Beach shortly after 11 UTC this morning. Since then, the
showers and thunderstorms have weakened significantly as they have
moved further onshore (the typical diurnal trend in this situation),
but additional weaker activity has formed further off to the south
and west in the waters off the Florida Panhandle. For this afternoon,
things could become very interesting over parts of the interior once
again, as this morning's 12 UTC tae sounding showed very steep low
to mid-level lapse rates, an Li of -8.7 using a parcel of 87/66,
along with a wet bulb zero height of only 9600ft. Therefore, if
eastern portions of the County Warning Area are able to de-stabilize once again (if
the mid and upper level cloud debris is able to dissipate), then the
potential for large hail could exist in some of the stronger
storms.

&&

Aviation (through 12z thursday)...
currently, VFR conditions are persisting across our County Warning Area...and the
best chances for showers and thunderstorms are expected across the
eastern terminals this afternoon.
