NWS Forecaster Discussion
Area forecast discussion National Weather Service Pocatello Idaho 243 am MDT Monday may 21 2012 Discussion...weak upper ridge currently over the area will shift eastward today as a negatively tilted trough advances into the Pacific northwest tonight. This trough will initiate the first of several rounds of showers and thunderstorms for the coming week. The nose of a 120 knots jet streak will enter the area Tuesday morning and will dip southward on Wednesday as a broad trough sets up over the west. The proximity of the jet combined with strong 700mb cold air advection will help produce near warning level winds for the snake plain on Tuesday. With a cold front moving through on Tuesday...temperatures will be notably cooler heading into the weekend. A secondary wave will dig the upper trough even further on Thursday. Have kept probability of precipitation higher than normal for the coming week until the upper low lifts out of the Great Basin on Sunday. Hinsberger && Aviation...VFR conditions will prevail today with increasing middle and upper cloud cover across the region associated with a low pressure system advancing toward the northwest coast. Attending moisture and instability may be enough to trigger isolated convection across the central mountains near ksun. Huston && Fire weather...increasing southwest winds are expected across the region today as a low pressure system advances toward the northwest coast. There may even be enough accompanying moisture and instability to help initiate convection across the central mountains later this afternoon and evening. The low is expected to shear into the northwest coast late tonight and spread east along the Canadian border Tuesday through Wednesday with an increasing chance of showers each day. Strong winds and cooler temperatures will also spread across southern Idaho Tuesday and Wednesday as a cold front advances across the region late tonight. Secondary Pacific energy digs into the northwest coast Thursday and Friday spinning off a closed low near northwest Nevada Friday afternoon placing southern Idaho in a favored position to receive enhanced shower activity Friday night and Saturday as the low lifts NE through the Great Basin. Huston && Pih watches/warnings/advisories...none. && $$
