NWS Forecaster Discussion

Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service Missoula Montana
325 am MDT Mon may 21 2012

Discussion...clouds will continue to increase through the day
ahead of an approaching trough of low pressure. Showers and
thunderstorms have already developed in western Oregon just east
of the Cascade mountains. This area of thunderstorms will continue
to move eastward and should arrive in central Idaho by late this
morning or early afternoon. Winds will pick up this afternoon
ahead of a cold front that should arrive tonight. The atmosphere
will be unstable ahead of this front as well which will support
the chance of thunderstorms. High temperatures today should be
just a little lower than Sunday but the big change is expected on
Tuesday with a near 20 degree cool down in high temperatures.

The jet stream will remain south of the area through the end of
the week, which will steer one disturbance after the other through
the northern rockies. Temperatures will be at or below normal with
some nights cold enough for frost in the Bitterroot/Missoula and
Flathead/mission valleys. Sensitive plants left outdoor will be at
risk for frost damage. Mountain locations and the back-country will
see snow showers...whereas the valleys will have rain showers.
Overnight and in the mornings 1 to 3 inches of snow may accumulate
on elevated surfaces and unimproved roads in the back country.

For Memorial Day weekend confidence is high that temperatures will
be near normal, but confidence is low on if or how much
precipitation there will be. Currently the forecast looks good for
at least showery conditions as the jet south of the area weakens.
However, there is also the possibility of a cut-off low forming
over eastern Montana and causing widespread rain over western
Montana.

&&

Aviation...

Clouds will increase and lower across the northern rockies during
the next 12 hours...as a storm system bears down on the region.
Terrain obscurations will become more numerous after 22/01800z due
to increase in rain shower activity. Winds near the ground will
start picking up by this afternoon.
