NWS Forecaster Discussion

Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service Paducah Kentucky

Update...
issued at 620 am CDT Monday may 21 2012

Update to the aviation section.

&&

Short term...(today through tuesday)
issued at 256 am CDT Monday may 21 2012

Difficult to determine exactly where the cold front is due to
convective outflows from previous convection but more than likely
runs from mvn to pof. Things are essentially dry across the County Warning Area right
now...but with plenty of moisture still around will keep
isolated/scattered wording until the drier air moves in. Have seen
isolated convection behind the boundary so followed the deep layer
1000-500 relative humidity averages from the models to determine the ending of
precipitation.

By tonight high pressure should be well in control. Very dry air
behind this front with dew points in the 30s and 40s in the
Central Plains. With this in mind...plus forecast soundings...have
lowered dew points through the period starting tonight. Afternoon
relative humidity values will be in the 30 percent range (at least) Tuesday and
Wednesday so what little rain most of US got yesterday will
quickly evaporate out of the soil.

Long term...(thursday through sunday)
issued at 256 am CDT Monday may 21 2012

Models maintain building an upper level high over the region through
the period...which will result in dry and unseasonably warm weather.
The GFS hints at isolated convection by Sunday into Monday whereas
the European model (ecmwf) holds out a little longer. These conditions will only
serve to maintain or increase short term drought conditions across
the area. We went lower than guidance on afternoon dew points given
model sounding depictions.

&&

Aviation...(for the 12z tafs through 12z Tuesday morning)
issued at 620 am CDT Monday may 21 2012

Spotty MVFR visibilities should jump back to p6sm once north-northwest winds kick up
this morning behind a cold front that will move across the region.
Middle and high clouds will persist for a good part of the morning
and early afternoon...with scattered VFR clouds below. Not enough of a
chance of precipitation to include in the tafs at this time. Winds
will let up tonight.
