NWS Forecaster Discussion

Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service Wichita Kansas
1201 PM CDT Monday may 21 2012

Aviation...18z tafs krsl/ksln/khut/kict/kcnu

Surface ridge axis from Iowa to eastern Kansas...will slide slowly
eastward into Tuesday morning...while a Lee trough steepens over
the High Plains. Easterly winds will continue to slowly veer
during the forecast period...then becoming gusty from the south
late Tuesday morning in central/south central Kansas. Some middle-level
altocumulus castellanus appears possible in central/south central Kansas Tuesday morning
given weak westerly flow at 700 mb and some moisture transport
northeastward off of the High Plains.

Previous discussion... /issued 343 am CDT Monday may 21 2012/

Discussion...

Today-tonight:
clouds and low level moisture may flirt with OK border area in
south central Kansas this morning as flow starts to veer. Still
anticipated decent warmup given relatively dry air and abundant
insolation.

Tuesday-Tuesday night:
winds will be on the increase during the day...and will flirt
with advisory criteria over central Kansas along/west of Highway 14.
Temperatures will push well above normal with maxes at or above 90
in Russell and Barton counties. The brisk winds will likely
persist into the night...leading to mild min temperatures Tuesday night.

Wednesday-Wednesday night:
maximum temperatures should be even warmer Wednesday ahead of slow moving
front and continued low level warm air advection. Maxes near or
just above 90 at all locations anticipated. Limited moisture/cap
should keep forecast dry.

Thursday-Sat:
main issue continue to be timing/location of cold front. Based on
thickness/850mb temperatures...initialization grids are still
running a bit cool. Also make consensus tweaks to trim back
southern edge of precipitation with front likely just working into
central Kansas before being shunted back to the north. -Howerton

Aviation...06z tafs krsl/ksln/khut/kict/kcnu

Isolated thunderstorms and rain that have festered over NC OK since ~02z will continue to
move east/southeast ~15kts the rest of the night & will therefore remain S-southeast of
kict. Excellent flying weather to continue over all 5 terminals through
late Monday night with light north/NE winds becoming east/southeast Monday morning with speeds
perhaps reaching ~15kts over krsl Monday afternoon.
