NWS Forecaster Discussion

Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service Goodland Kansas
1140 am MDT Monday may 21 2012

Short term...(today through tuesday)
issued at 230 am MDT Monday may 21 2012

South winds of 20 to 30 miles per hour with higher gusts will develop late
this morning and continue through the day. We should lose the
gustiness tonight before returning to breezy/windy conditions
Tuesday ahead of an approaching cold front. Strongest winds
expected east of the Colorado/Kansas border.

For today and tonight may see some isolated late afternoon/evening
thunderstorms move off the Front Range into the forecast area as a
weather disturbance moves through. Will need to watch along the
Colorado/Kansas border Tuesday afternoon as isolated thunderstorms again
possible. Moisture remains less then ideal but forcing along the
dry line may be enough to generate a few. Have kept silent probability of precipitation at
this time.

High temperatures today 80-85 with overnight lows in the 50s. For
Tuesday much warmer with low to middle 90s.

Long term...(tuesday night through sunday)
issued at 230 am MDT Monday may 21 2012

Tuesday night-Wednesday night...dry Tuesday night with a chance
for thunderstorms Wednesday afternoon across the northwest portion
of the area where better moisture and jet dynamics occur. This
area of favorable moisture and dynamics remains generally north of
Interstate 70 where highest probability of precipitation will remain.

Tough call on wednesdays high temperatures. Models remain
inconsistent in the handling of the cold front. Didnt make any
large changes from previous forecasts at this time and will
continue to advertise low 80s across the north...near 90 across
the south.

Thursday through Sunday...a number of shortwave troughs will
approach and move over the region as a longwave trough slowly shifts
eastward over the western Continental U.S.. the longwave trough will dig
southward for much of the period before beginning to lift northward
during the daytime on Saturday. The shortwave troughs will bring the
potential for showers and thunderstorms to the area for much of the
period.

Feel increasingly confident about precipitation chances on Thursday morning
as a cold front moves in from the northwest. Guidance is trending
cooler in northeastern Colorado...which makes sense given the timing
of the front...so decreased maximum temperatures on Thursday along with
neighboring offices. The potential for precipitation on Friday night into
Saturday morning is also looking better as a warm front lifts
northward. Conditions should be windy on Saturday as a surface low
deepens over eastern Colorado...but guidance now shows higher
relative humidities compared to yesterday...so potential for fire
weather conditions looks more likely on Sunday than Saturday.

Aviation...(for the 18z tafs through 18z Tuesday afternoon)
issued at 1132 am MDT Monday may 21 2012

VFR conditions expected for the next 24 hours at both locations as
developing surface trough will keep winds out of the south in the 15
to 20 knots range through the bulk of the period although winds
should die down a bit in the overnight hours. Potential for
isolated thunderstorms between 22 and 2z mainly at gld as storms form
along surface trough and drift east...but probabilities too low to
include in tafs at this time.
