NWS Forecaster Discussion

Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service Caribou ME
1233 PM EDT Monday may 21 2012

Synopsis...
high pressure will remain east of the area today keeping an
unseasonably warm southerly flow across the region. Low pressure
will approach from the south Tuesday...while a cold front
approaches from the northwest.

&&

Near term /through tonight/...
1230 PM update...temperatures are already well into the 80s in
several locations across northern Maine. With several hours of
full sunshine still to go, expect highs to be in the middle and upper
80s over much of northern Maine, with some places in the far
northwest breaking 90. Further south, highs will be a bit cooler,
generally in the upper 70s to around 80. The immediate coast will
be the cool spot owing to onshore flow; highs in the 60s there. Have
updated the forecast according to the above. Also threw in a few
clouds over the Saint John valley where some cumulus are starting
to pop up. Otherwise, no other changes needed.

Previous discussion...another very warm and sunny day on tap for
our forecast area today as a ridge of high pressure to our east keeps a warm srly
flow in place... Sat imagery currently shows mainly clear skies
across our area west/ just some patchy high clouds noted just S and west
of the region. Expect this to continue through much of today before
clouds associated west/ low pressure over the Middle Atlantic States begin
expanding nwrd into our southern areas late. Guidance yesterday was on
the cool side and see no reason why temperatures will not be even a few
degrees warmer today so have boosted maxes away from the coast up
a few degrees west/ generally middle-upper 80s north and into the upper 70s
to lower 80 southern areas away from the immediate coast.

For tonight...clouds should continue to thicken from S-north as low pressure
over the middle Atlantic region lifts newrd... model consensus takes this
low to just S of the New England coast by 12z Tuesday and will
introduce chance probability of precipitation across our southern areas overnight west/ likely probability of precipitation
southern areas by Erly Tuesday am. Also expect some low coastal stratus to
work into southern areas overnight in the increasingly moist srly flow.

&&

Short term /Tuesday through Wednesday/...
moisture will continue to increase across the region on Tuesday as
low pressure lifts northeast along the western Atlantic. At the same
time a cold front will approach from the west. These systems will
combine to bring the chance for showers Tuesday and Tuesday night.
The low will pass to the east on Wednesday allowing for some
improvement but a boundary will linger across downeast providing
the continued chance for showers.

&&

Long term /Wednesday night through Sunday/...
a warm front will lift northeast across the region Wednesday night
through Thursday. Warm and muggy conditions are then expected
Thursday through Friday. A strong cold front will sweep across the
region on Saturday followed by much cooler and drier weather later
Sunday and the beginning of next week.

&&

Aviation /18z Monday through Saturday/...
near term: VFR conds will persist through much of tonight across the
far north west/ conds expected to deteriorate to low MVFR/IFR west/ coastal
stratus at our southern taf sites by late this evening. These conds should
reach up to khul by late tonight/Erly Tuesday and may possibly even reach
the far northern taf sites by Erly Tuesday am...

Short term: IFR/MVFR conditions are expected Tuesday and Tuesday
night in low clouds and showers. VFR and periods of MVFR/IFR...especially
across downeast are expected Wednesday through Friday.

&&

Marine...
near term: southeast swell continues on the waters west/ seas 3.5-4 feet at this time...
expect these conds to persist through tonight west/ winds/seas remaining
below Small Craft Advisory levels... fog is expected become an issue tonight over the
waters in the moist srly flow.

Short term: winds/seas should generally remain below 5 feet through
much of the period.

&&

Car watches/warnings/advisories...

Marine...none.
