NWS Forecaster Discussion
Area forecast discussion National Weather Service Grand Rapids Michigan 128 PM EDT Monday may 21 2012 Synopsis... issued at 330 am EDT Monday may 21 2012 A cooler airmass will move in for today and Tuesday with some lingering showers today. Highs will only reach the upper 60s to lower 70s today and Tuesday before temperatures moderate for midweek. After lingering showers today the next chance for rain and thunderstorms will not come until very late in the week. && Short term...(today through Tuesday afternoon) issued at 330 am EDT Monday may 21 2012 Cooler weather on tap for today behind the cold front with maximum temperatures only expected to reach the middle 60s north to low to middle 70s far southeast toward jxn. Some showers will linger today before gradually tapering off from west to east as suggested by latest sref guidance probability of precipitation. Both 00z NAM/GFS guidance quantitative precipitation forecast forecasts suggest very little additional rainfall will fall after 12z though... so most of the day should be dry after the early morning showers move out. High pressure will build in from the west for tonight through Tuesday which will bring partly cloudy skies and seasonable temperatures. Long term...(tuesday night through sunday) issued at 330 am EDT Monday may 21 2012 Cold front will push through the region Thursday night into Friday with some thunderstorms. Models are in better agreement on this. Overall the threat seems low as the low level jet will be situated north of the forecast area.I did increase highs on Friday slightly to account for the sharper low level thermal ridge that will be pulling through. Then a warm front lifts northward through the region Saturday into Sunday. Some uncertainty as to how quickly it lifts through...which will impact the moisture pooling and instability. The most recent run of the European model (ecmwf) and GFS do lift it north of cad by sun. Will mention some scattered storms both Sat and sun for parts of the region due to this warm front and elevated instability. Northern locations could see storms on sun due to their proximity to the front. && Aviation...(for the 18z tafs through 18z Tuesday afternoon) issued at 128 PM EDT Monday may 21 2012 Stratus clouds with some areas of MVFR ceilings will persist this afternoon but drier air will be moving in from the west and expect the clouds to clear by azo and mkg around 19z or 20z and a couple hours later across lan and jxn with VFR conditions for tonight. An area of light showers will be departing lan and jxn by 21z. && Marine... issued at 330 am EDT Monday may 21 2012 Winds behind the cold front today may gust to around or slightly over 20 kts at times... but waves will remain below four feet. This should just keep it under Small Craft Advisory today with minimal wind/wave action tonight and Tuesday as high pressure builds in. && Hydrology... issued at 330 am EDT Monday may 21 2012 Quantitative precipitation forecast overnight was not significant enough to have any appreciable affect on river levels. The next chance for significant rainfall after early this morning will not come until very late this week. && GRR watches/warnings/advisories... Michigan...none. Lm...none. && $$ Synopsis...Laurens short term...Laurens long term...mjs aviation...ostuno hydrology...Laurens marine...Laurens
