NWS Forecaster Discussion

Area forecast discussion...updated aviation
National Weather Service St Louis MO
634 PM CDT Tuesday may 22 2012

Short term...
issued at 319 PM CDT Tuesday may 22 2012
(tonight and wednesday)

Tranquil and dry weather pattern continues tgt and Wednesday as surface ridge
currently extending from Lake Michigan SW in Arkansas moves slowly eastward.
Despite the clear sky and relatively low surface dewpoints for late may
low temperatures tgt should be slightly warmer than Monday night across
much of the forecast area with weak low level warm air advection and 850 mb
temperatures slowly rising from west to east. The coolest temperatures
will be across southeastern MO and southwestern Illinois where the low level winds will
still be light just west of the surface ridge axis. Much warmer...above
normal temperatures can be expected on Wednesday as low level southerly winds
increase and the 850 mb temperatures rise to about 15-17 degree c
across our area by 00z Thursday. Little cloud cover is expected on
Wednesday...may be some high level clouds.

Long term...
issued at 319 PM CDT Tuesday may 22 2012
(wednesday night through tuesday)

Southerly flow in place over the region will continue to intensify
toward the end of the week as a very strong high pressure system
builds in just southeast of the area. Models are in good agreement
regarding the position of the high over the middle Mississippi and
Tennessee valleys...with 500mb heights now prognosticated to approach 5930
to 5940m over the weekend...and corresponding 500mb temperatures in
the +20c to +24c range. On Thursday night and into Friday...there
is a slight chance for some thunderstorms across extreme northern
Missouri in association with an area of enhanced moisture
convergence and frontogenetical forcing. The GFS has continued to
be the outlier regarding the precipitation forecast...wanting to
bring precipitation as far south as middle Missouri due to shortwave
interactions. However...have elected to side with the
NAM...ECMWF..and sref output and keep precipitation confined to
extreme northern counties in the County Warning Area. Beyond Thursday night and
Friday...the majority of the Holiday weekend will be dry...with
the next chance of precipitation associated with frontal passage Monday
afternoon and into Monday evening.
