NWS Forecaster Discussion

Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service Springfield MO
602 PM CDT Tuesday may 22 2012

..update to aviation...

Short term (today through thursday)...

Short term focus remains on gusty winds and increasing
temperatures over the coming days...as surface high pressure
pushes east and strong upper level ridging develops over the
southeastern Continental U.S..

An expansive area of surface ridging currently stretches from the
Great Lakes...across the Ozarks...south toward the arklatex. This
area of high pressure will slowly slide east of the area
tonight...likely resulting in a rather large gradient for
overnight lows. Temperatures over the Eastern Ozarks...where good
radiational cooling conditions should persist...will drop into
the upper 40s...while a persistent southeast breeze over western
Missouri should keep temperatures from falling much below 60.

Southerly winds will increase through the day on Wednesday...as
the surface reflection of an amplifying upper level pattern
results in a tightening surface pressure gradient over the region.
This will continue through much of the day Thursday...as surface
low pressure further organizes in the Central Plains. Winds both
days will be quite gusty as a result...with sustained speeds
between 20 and 25 miles per hour...and gusts of 30 to 35 miles per hour expected. A
very warm airmass will build into the region Wednesday and
Thursday...with middle to upper 80s common. With southerly
winds...the warmest readings look to be across the U.S. 54
corridor...where downslope flow from the plateau will add a
couple of degrees to highs.

By Thursday afternoon and evening...a cold front will try to drop
south over central/north central Kansas and Missouri as a
shortwave ejects east from Colorado into eastern Nebraska and
Iowa. The airmass south and east of the front will be very
capped...and only a small window of opportunity exists over the
far northern reaches of the County Warning Area where ascent from the
aforementioned shortwave may be enough to break the cap in a few
spots. Overall...however...I think the cap will just remain too
strong for convection...and as such...have left probability of precipitation out of the
forecast at this time.

long term (friday through tuesday)...

An amplifying western trough to eastern ridge pattern across the
Continental U.S. Will dominate the extended period forecast through the
weekend. Rain chances Friday and beyond will be minimal with the
storm track and frontal boundary remaining just north of the
area. Surface high pressure entrenched over the southeastern
Continental U.S. Under the ridge aloft will sustain southerly surface flow
off of the Gulf of Mexico through the weekend. This will result
in temperatures well above normal in the lower to middle 90s across
the area through the weekend. Surface moisture will also increase
across the area. Dewpoints approaching 70 degrees can be expected
western areas by Friday afternoon. This pattern will begin to
break down toward the end of the weekend as the trough over the
western Continental U.S. Begins to move toward the east. Early in the work
week...the storm track is expected by the long range models to
move further south and east ahead of a major shortwave trough
passing over the northern tier of states. This may push a frontal
boundary into the area Monday into Tuesday.

Aviation...

For the 00z...VFR will prevail with high pressure in control of
the weather pattern over the Ozarks. Light southerly winds will
become gusty by middle morning tomorrow and through the afternoon on
Wednesday. Mostly clear skies will be the rule of thumb through tomorrow.
