NWS Forecaster Discussion

Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service El Paso Texas/Santa Teresa nm
349 PM MDT Tuesday may 22 2012

Synopsis...
hot dry weather with windy to breezy conditions will continue
through this week...as a complex upper level trough slowly
settling into the northwestern states...generates strengthening
winds over the region. Similar conditions will continue into this
weekend...as a low pressure system heads south across the West Coast.
Dry conditions with above normal temperatures should persist into
early next week.

&&

Discussion...
a change in the upper level pattern is in store across east Pacific and
much of the u... Pacific jet energy starts to dive south off
the California coast. This is transporting relatively cooler air
into the northwest states...leading to development of a broad
trough of low pressure in this area. Trough is forecast to dig
south into the central rockies through Wednesday evening. This
will strengthen westerly flow aloft over our area stating tonight...while
assisting in development of a surface Lee cyclone to our northeast over
the western High Plains Wednesday. These influences will result
in sustained southwest winds 25 to 35 miles per hour...with gusts to 50 miles per hour
area wide Wednesday afternoon and early Wednesday evening. Highest
gusts over 50 miles per hour will be felt along east slopes of area mountains
and through gaps and passes in elevated terrain. These winds could
persist well into Wednesday evening in these favored areas.

Wind speeds should average around 10 miles per hour slower Thursday
afternoon...as the Lee cyclone and attendant surface pressure
gradient weaken across our area.

Pattern will reinforce the portion of the trough over the western
states...will receive reinforcement towards this weekend...as
jet energy carries an upper level low southward along the
California coast. As a result...windy to breezy conditions are
expected to continue for an extended period of time through the
upcoming weekend. The deep west to southwest flow...will also
maintain temperatures well above normal through the period.

&&

Aviation...valid 23/00z-24/00z.
P6sm sky clear through period. West-southwest winds of 15-20kts through 03z before decreasing
to around 10-15kts. Kelp may see period of 27020g30kt from 05z-10z as
inversion sets up over area. West to SW winds will increase to
25-35g45kts between 16z-19z and remain strong through 24/00z.

&&

Fire weather...
critical fire conditions will be the norm for the next several days
as a broad trough and then upper low move through the western Continental U.S..
this will keep west to southwest winds in the breezy to windy
category through at least Saturday. Temperatures in The Lowlands
will approach or break the century mark Wednesday before cooling
down into the lower to middle 90s for the end of the week. In
addition...minimum relative humidities will continue to fall into
the single digits for many locations. Red flag warnings have already
been issued for Wednesday and will likely be needed for Thursday and
Friday as well. Some relief from winds possible starting Sunday but
little to no moisture on the horizon.
