NWS Forecaster Discussion
Area forecast discussion National Weather Service Elko Nevada 336 PM PST sun Feb 12 2012 Synopsis...a strong winter storm will bring accumulating snow to central Nevada Monday and Tuesday. The heaviest snow is expected across southern Lander and Eureka counties...as well as northern Nye and White Pine counties from Monday morning through Tuesday morning. A much weaker system will drop through northern and central Nevada Wednesday. && Short term...tonight through Tuesday. Light mainly mountain snow showers this afternoon across central and eastern portions of the County Warning Area will diminish through this evening. A strong storm system will begin to affect western Humboldt County early Monday morning...and spread southeast into mainly central Nevada later Monday morning. Snow amounts across southeastern most Humboldt County...as well as the western portions of northern Lander County are expected to be in the 1 to 2 inch range with some locally higher amounts Monday morning. At this time decided not to issue an impact based advisory as the expected area of impact is such a small percent of any zone. May need to cover any moderate to heavy snow showers...which are currently prognosticated for the Winnemucca to Battle Mountain area...with a now cast Monday morning if in fact they do develop. Have upgraded the winter storm watches for southern Lander and Eureka counties as well and northern Nye and White Pine counties for the Monday morning through Tuesday morning time-frame...as the bulk of the dynamics is focused in this area. Heaviest snow accumulations are expected across the southern half of southern Lander and Eureka counties...as well as the northern portion of northern Nye County and the western portion of White Pine County. Locations along the Highway 50 corridor including the cities of Austin and Eureka could see very heavy snow showers...with the potential for over a foot of snow by Tuesday morning. Dropped the watch for the Ruby Mountains for tomorrow...instead opting for a Winter Weather Advisory. The northern half of the Ruby Range may not even meet advisory criteria...however dynamics along with some upslope shower activity across southern portions should be enough for 3 to 9 inches over the lower and middle-slope regions...with higher amounts possible over southern Ruby Montana range ridge lines. Showers diminish west to east Tuesday morning lingering over White Pine County into Tuesday afternoon. Long term...Tuesday night through next Sunday. The models are in fairly good agreement with ridging over the County Warning Area Tuesday evening followed by a upper low digging south into extreme western Nevada after midnight. Upper low digs into central California on Wednesday with wrap around moisture mainly over southern Nevada Wednesday afternoon. Have lowered probability of precipitation to slight chance as main dynamics from this system remain west and south of the County Warning Area. High pressure builds into the County Warning Area Wednesday night through Saturday morning. A stronger upper low pressure system is forecasted by models to push into western Nevada Saturday afternoon digging into Southern California by Sunday morning. GFS has best chance of precipitation at this time in the deformation zone along a line from Austin to Elko at this time...while ec broad brushes the entire area. With uncertainty in models have low probability of precipitation days 6 and 7. && Aviation...as high pressure builds into the Great Basin this evening expect VFR conditions. However...may have MVFR conditions briefly early this evening at kely from lingering snow showers. As an upper low moves into the area Monday...expect MVFR with IFR conditions at times Monday afternoon mainly at ktph...kely and kwmc. && Lkn watches/warnings/advisories... Winter Storm Warning from 10 am Monday to 10 am PST Tuesday for White Pine County. Winter Weather Advisory from 10 am Monday to 10 am PST Tuesday for Ruby Mountains/East Humboldt Range. Winter Storm Warning from 7 am Monday to 7 am PST Tuesday for northern Nye County...southern Lander County and southern Eureka County. && $$ 96/87/87
