NWS Forecaster Discussion
Area forecast discussion National Weather Service Boise Idaho 836 PM MST sun Feb 12 2012 Discussion... fairly quiet weather this evening as weak upper trough exits the area. The only remnants that remain are low and middle clouds over the Magic Valley and also the Frank church wilderness area. Those should continue to exit tonight. Otherwise attention now moves to the next low moving onshore near the California/or border. Latest nam12 model very similar to 12z/18z model runs in driving it into northern California and the Great Basin overnight. Models continue to show difluence aloft over southeast Oregon through the southern Highlands tonight through tmrw. Current pop forecast looks good keeping best probability of precipitation south of a line from Burns to Twin Falls. High clouds expected to move across the zones just after midnight...so concerned on how much fog the area may really see overnight. Dont have a huge aerial extent so will leave current forecast alone. && Aviation...VFR through Monday afternoon...except near and south of kbno where MVFR/local IFR in snow showers will develop after 12z...and near kmyl where IFR/LIFR fog will be possible overnight. Elsewhere increasing clouds overnight...with lowering ceilings during the day Wednesday. Best chance of showers Wednesday will be over southern areas of Oregon...and south of the Snake River Plain in Idaho. Surface winds will be light north or northwest through Wednesday afternoon. Light northwest winds aloft up to 10 kts at 10k feet mean sea level. && Previous discussion... short term...tonight through Tuesday...west winds 10 to 20 miles per hour across the area...with gusts up to 30 miles per hour around Mountain Home... will diminish after sunset to light diurnal. Isolated snow showers in the Idaho mountains will exit the region this evening as the slow moving upper trough progresses east. Patchy stratus generally from halfway Oregon through Twin Falls Idaho and northeastward...is expected to be slow to erode. Areas where it does so will be prone to patchy fog development. Have fog in the Long Valley and lower Treasure valley for tonight as favored areas per afternoon dew points and local diurnal wind circulations. Wavy cold front offshore this afternoon has brought light rain/drizzle on the Oregon coast and thin cirrus into Burns. This system is expected to bring up to 2 inches of snow for travel west and south of Burns for Monday morning...while SW Idaho remains dry. Upper support for the front is mainly over Harney County to the Nevada border west of Duck Valley through Monday....these areas expected to get the bulk of the precipitation 06-24z Monday. Expecting gusty west winds behind this first trough/front of 10 to 20 miles per hour gusting to 30 miles per hour in windier areas...behind the front Monday afternoon. Northern branch upper support is weaker and crosses southeast Oregon Monday night and SW Idaho very early Tuesday morning with low probability of precipitation and minimal quantitative precipitation forecast. Expect winds 10-20 miles per hour Tuesday afternoon across the area behind the northern branch trough/front. The pattern will keep temperatures near to around 3 degrees above normal in the short term. Long term...Tuesday night through Sunday...model runs showing improved agreement regarding an upper level low...which is now prognosticated to affect the forecast area Tuesday night through Wednesday morning. Low will bring cool conditions and light snowfall to southeast Oregon and the Idaho/Nevada border by early Wednesday. Western snake plain now looks to remain dry. Low will exit by Wednesday afternoon - leaving the latter half of the week to be dominated by above normal temperatures under ridging aloft. The next notable Pacific low will dig into the Pacific northwest next weekend. Expect a return to cooler/unsettled weather by Saturday afternoon. && Boi watches/warnings/advisories... Idaho...none. Or...none. && $$ Weather.Gov/Boise Discussion...CR aviation.....Bb previous short term...vm previous long term....Mt/wh
