NWS Forecaster Discussion

Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service Columbia SC
1118 am EDT Wednesday may 23 2012

Synopsis...
upper level trough over the region will slowly move eastward and
exit the region Thursday night. Weak high pressure and an upper
level ridge will build in for Friday through the weekend.

&&

Near term /until 8 PM this evening/...
upper level trough remains over the region. Latest visible satellite
imagery shows the center of the upper circulation over
upstate SC. The trough will continue tracking eastward today with
the cold pool aloft also moving through the forecast area...mainly
over the northern midlands. With this feature further east than
yesterday and instability also weaker have remained with slight
chance probability of precipitation for most areas and chance for the northern midlands
into the Pee Dee area mainly late this afternoon into the early evening.
Temperatures this afternoon will be in the middle to upper 80s.

&&

Short term /8 PM this evening through Friday/...
tonight...the majority of the upper level trough over the region
will begin ejecting eastward with the cold pool aloft a bit slower
to eject. This will keep some clouds over the northern midlands
with showers and thunderstorms ending this evening with the loss
of diurnal heating. With some drier air entering the middle and upper
levels this evening thunderstorms which continue into the evening
hours could develop some strong and gusty winds. Overall severe
threat remains low. Temperatures tonight will be in the lower to
middle 60s.

Thursday and Thursday night...upper level trough will continue to
weaken and eject northeastward as weak high pressure begins to
build into the region. Have remained with slight chance probability of precipitation for
Thursday afternoon and evening as the remnants of the cold pool
and upper trough could generate some convective
activity...especially as temperatures climb toward the 90 degree
mark. Convective activity will dissipate with sunset and with
additional drier air moving into the region clouds will diminish
Thursday night. Overnight lows will be in the middle 60s for most
locations with a few lower 60s in outlying areas.

Friday...upper level trough will finally move out of the area as
the upper level ridge along with weak surface high pressure build
into the region. Models indicate dry air in the middle and upper
levels which will lead to a mostly sunny to partly cloudy
afternoon with highs around 90 for most areas and slightly cooler
along Lake Shores.

&&

Long term /Friday night through Tuesday/...
few changes made to the long term as models remain in good
agreement. Upper level ridge will dominate the region along with
weak high pressure through the weekend and into early next week.
Chances of thunderstorms will return to the forecast for Tuesday
as a weak frontal boundary approaches from the northwest.
Temperatures will be near to slightly above normal through the
long term with daytime highs in the upper 80s to lower 90s and
overnight lows in the middle to upper 60s.

&&

Aviation /15z Wednesday through Sunday/...
patchy early morning fog will dissipate by 13z. Expect VFR for most
of the taf period.

The upper low overhead this morning will move off to the northeast
this afternoon. A weak surface trough of low pressure will linger
across the midlands. Expect isolated to scattered diurnal storms.
Location and timing difficult to pinpoint...so will not include in
forecast at this time. Near calm winds early this morning will
become southwest around 10 miles per hour after 15z.

Could see patches of MVFR/IFR fog again late tonight with diurnal
cooling and boundary layer winds decoupling. Have indicated MVFR fog
at ags/ogb after midnight.

Extended aviation outlook...MVFR ceiling/visibility possible in scattered
convection Thursday with an approaching cold front and upper low
pressure system.

&&

Cae watches/warnings/advisories...
SC...none.
Georgia...none.
