NWS Forecaster Discussion
Area forecast discussion National Weather Service San Angelo Texas 558 PM CST sun Feb 12 2012 Discussion... see 00z aviation discussion below. && Aviation... IFR conditions are expected at the terminals tonight and Monday morning due to widespread low clouds. Radar trends are indicating that precipitation is moving northeast at a good clip across west central Texas. Looks like the best coverage of precipitation will be across the Big Country during the early evening hours...with the kabi terminal possibly seeing another burst of snpl. Also...warming low level thermal profiles will change the precipitation type to mainly -fzra by 02z Monday at the kabi terminal. Only isolated to scattered rain showers are expected to affect the southern terminals tonight. Most of the precipitation will be over Monday...with mainly VFR conditions after 20z Monday. 21 && Previous discussion... /issued 404 PM CST sun Feb 12 2012/ Short term... the first shortwave that originated from Mexico resulted in about a half to an inch of snow across a large part of wc Texas today. This wave will continue to track off to the northeast this evening. The second shortwave trough was already spreading areas of freezing rain and sleet across far West Texas. This system will bring more sleet into the Winter Weather Advisory area through midnight. The nam12 soundings continue to support sleet through midnight mainly along and north of a line from Mertzon to San Angelo to Eden to Brownwood. After midnight...the column quickly warms and the sleet becomes mixed with rain with a gradual changeover to all rain. As temperatures continue to rise south of this line...expect most of the winter precipitation to become liquid around 6 PM as temperatures rise above freezing. For this reason...the Winter Weather Advisory will continue through at least midnight for the area north of a line from Mertzon to San Angelo to Eden to Brownwood. South of this line will extend the advisory until 9 PM. The precipitation should end by Monday morning as a drier southwest to west wind overtakes the region. Look for temperatures warming into the 60s with plenty of sunshine on Monday. Long term... continued warm up Tuesday and Wednesday as surface low develops in the Panhandle and moves across Oklahoma. A slight chance of showers Tuesday night and Wednesday morning...mainly along and east of a Brownwood to Sonora line...as a weak surface trough moves through west central Texas and low level moisture east. A cold front pushes through Wednesday night as the surface low continues its movement northeast. Only a slight cool down Thursday and Friday as the origins of the cold front are from the Pacific northwest. Both ec and GFS models track another upper low from Baja California California Thursday...across Texas this weekend. Ec is more progressive with the system...pushing it east by Saturday morning. GFS is holding onto a slower Saturday solution. Will give a nod to the more consistent GFS solution and continue a chance of showers Saturday and Saturday night. && Preliminary point temps/pops...
