NWS Forecaster Discussion
Area forecast discussion National Weather Service Brownsville Texas 445 am CST Monday Feb 13 2012 Short term /today through Tuesday/...light rain and drizzle will continue through sunrise today as overrunning pattern continues. Most of these showers are moving to the north/northwest at around 20 to 25 miles per hour across the Rio Grande Valley under overcast skies. Little accumulation is expected with this activity. Southeast winds will begin to weaken and shift to the south as a surface high pressure migrates eastward. Temperatures today will rebound into the 70s across the County Warning Area. Precipitation will diminish in the late morning hours as a weak cold front pushes through the rgv later this afternoon. Southerly winds will briefly shift westerly with the passage of the weak front. Tonight's low will be in the mild side compared to Sunday night as the air mass with this front is not too cold. Tuesday southeasterly flow at the surface returns bringing a surge of moisture into the area. High temperatures will warm back up into the high 70s. Not much precipitation expected for Tuesday. Long term /Tuesday night through Sunday/...the long term forecast period will be marked by the Wednesday passage of a cold front and the potential development Friday of an area of low pressure along the Lower Texas coast due to the approach and passage of a filling 500 mb low pressure system through the Lone Star state. This pattern...coupled with a general southwest-to-northeast middle-level flow...will result in isolated to scattered showers for deep south Texas and the Rio Grande Valley through much of the period. Not until Saturday afternoon through Sunday...when the middle-level flow becomes markedly more zonal...do drier conditions return. Expect near to above normal temperatures during the daytime and at night with no major cold air intrusions. && Marine...today through Tuesday...Small Craft Advisory conditions continue through this morning today for the offshore waters. This conditions will improve this afternoon and evening as the high pressure gradient weakens. Southerly flow will continue through Tuesday as the low pressure gradient that develops over the Gulf Coast will keep winds breezy. Tuesday night through Sunday...generally moderate winds and seas will prevail along the Lower Texas coast Tuesday night through Friday night as high pressure initially interacts with low pressure over the Texas Panhandle...followed by a cold front that will pass through the Lower Texas coast Thursday morning. Portions of the adjacent coastal waters of deep south Texas and the Rio Grande Valley will experience small craft exercise caution and/or Small Craft Advisory conditions during the Tuesday night through Friday night time frame. Winds and seas will then increase to more likely Small Craft Advisory criteria Saturday and Sunday due to a low pressure system that will develop over the western and central Gulf of Mexico that will interact with high pressure building south through Texas. && Preliminary point temps/pops...
