NWS Forecaster Discussion
Area forecast discussion National Weather Service El Paso Texas/Santa Teresa nm 351 am MST Monday Feb 13 2012 Synopsis... westerly winds will bring mostly dry weather with warmer temperatures today and Tuesday. However an upper level disturbance with a cold front will also cause windy conditions on Tuesday with slightly cooler weather on Wednesday. Another disturbance moving across northern Mexico will bring a few lowland rain and mountain snow showers Thursday night and Friday. && Discussion... larger scale pattern will remain the same through the forecast period as strong upper ridge near West Coast will result in yet more upper waves/impulses dropping southeastward into the southwestern United States. For today zonal flow aloft and weak Lee troughing to the east will induce breezy westerly winds across the County Warning Area with warmer dry weather. Rather strong upper trough will then move across Arizona Tuesday afternoon before continuing eastward into New Mexico and western Texas tomorrow night. This system will generate Lee cyclone over northeastern New Mexico while 70 knots middle level jet extends through the region. Thus windy conditions are expected on Tuesday afternoon/evening. Some question as to if wind speeds will attain advisory levels however as stronger dynamics aloft will occur after dark and thus after peak vertical mixing time. Trough and associated Pacific front will be east of the area by Wednesday morning with high temperatures 5 to 10 degrees cooler Wednesday afternoon. Both GFS and European model (ecmwf) in good agreement in moving a closed low into northwestern Mexico on Thursday and subsequently moving system eastward across northern Mexico in Friday. Backing more southerly flow in advance of system should transport at least moderate amounts of moisture into the region so will outlook slight chances of lowland rains/mountain snows Thursday night and Friday. West to northwest flow aloft and weak high pressure at the surface indicate dry seasonably warm weather next weekend. && Aviation...valid 13/12z-14/12z. Westerly winds will result in VFR conditions through the period with areas of ceilings at or above 7000 feet above ground level. Areas of moderate turbulence below 5000 feet above ground level this afternoon...especially over the mountains and along western slopes. Surface winds gusting to 30 miles per hour between 21z and 01z today. && Fire weather... westerly winds will bring warmer mostly dry weather to the region today and Tuesday except for slight chances for light rain or snow over the higher mountains on Tuesday. An upper disturbance with a cold front will also bring windy conditions Tuesday afternoon and early evening with gusts to 50 miles per hour possible over a few areas..especially along eastern slopes. Winds decreasing and temperatures becoming 5 to 10 degrees cooler on Wednesday after cold front passes. Westerly winds will sustain dry weather on Thursday before another upper disturbance brings a few lowland rain and mountain snow showers Thursday night and Friday. Lowest afternoon relative humidities around 25 to 35 percent lowlands and 35 to 45 percent mountains most of the period. && Preliminary point temps/pops...
