NWS Forecaster Discussion

Area forecast discussion...updated aviation section
National Weather Service Salt Lake City Utah
1037 PM MDT Wednesday may 23 2012

Synopsis...a much cooler airmass will remain in place through
tomorrow. A fairly moist Pacific storm is expected to cross the
Great Basin late Friday into Saturday...with a drying trend
expected for the latter half of the Holiday weekend.

&&

Discussion...the broad trough gradually carving out over western
Continental U.S. Will continue to push additional cool/stable air into the Great
Basin through Thursday. The developing upper low sliding southeast
out of the Gulf of Alaska and into the Pacific northwest Thursday
will continue south into California for Friday/Friday night. The
latest versions of the GFS/European model (ecmwf) remain remarkably similar in
timing and intensity of this feature...even as it ejects northeast
through the basin early this weekend.

The first major issue with this developing storm will be the winds
on Friday. The deep and rather strong southerly flow ahead of the
low along the likelihood of surface cyclogenesis across western
Utah will create ideal conditions for strong winds for
southern/western Utah Friday afternoon/evening. Will probably see
wind highlights entering the forecast over the next couple of
forecast cycles...with a high wind watch a distinct possibility
for Friday.

Precipitation will enter the picture late Friday afternoon/night as the
upper low begins to lift northeast through the western Great
Basin. Dynamic lift along with substantial cold air aloft and
more than adequate deep layer moisture should produce a fairly
broad area of precipitation into Saturday. The heaviest precipitation will
likely stay in close proximity to the upper lows track across
northwest Utah. Snow-levels will be falling as the low moves
through...though at this time it looks like accumulations in the
high country will remain on the low side. Southern/eastern Utah
will receive what looks to be a brief convective event along the
front as it moves east-northeast with the upper low on Saturday.

The latter half of the Memorial Day weekend will likely be
salvaged as the low lifts quickly away from the area Saturday
night. The lingering shallow instability in the wake of the exiting
system could generate some weak convection over the higher terrain
Sunday afternoon. Significantly drier/warmer air ushered in on a
southerly flow aloft will bring a warming trend to the state early
next week.

&&

Aviation.../updated to mention thunder/...VFR conditions will
continue at the slc terminal through Thursday morning. Ceilings
around 7-8 kft will dissipate around 05-06z with the threat of
showers/isolated thunderstorms and erratic surface winds ending.
Generally light southeast drainage will develop around 08-09z.

&&

Fire weather...the cold front across extreme southern Utah will
likely turn back to the north Thursday/Friday. Cooler temperatures and
somewhat higher relative humidity values will exist north of the frontal
boundary...with continued very dry and warm conditions to the
south. Critical fire weather conditions will form again across
portions of extreme southern Utah Thursday. Severe fore conditions
are expected Friday and very windy and dry conditions will exist
ahead of approaching Pacific trough scheduled to arrive early in
the coming weekend. Numerous red flag warnings will remain in
effect at various times across most valley zones of southern and
eastern Utah through Friday.

Once the Pacific trough lifts northeast out of the area late
Saturday...winds will diminish allowing red flag conditions to
temporarily abate. A chance for wetting rains will exist across
northern Utah late Friday/Saturday remains with generally lighter
winds for Sunday and Monday.

&&

Slc watches/warnings/advisories...

feet for utz489-494.
