NWS Forecaster Discussion

Area forecast discussion...corrected
National Weather Service Baltimore Maryland/Washington District of Columbia
246 PM EST sun Feb 12 2012

Synopsis...
high pressure will build across the region tonight through Monday.
Unsettled weather is expected Monday night through Tuesday as
several upper level disturbances may bring light precipitation to
the region. A cold front is expected on Thursday.

&&

Near term /through Monday/...
tight pressure gradient continues across the region originating from
deep surface low in the Canadian maritime region coupled with high
pressure over the lower MS valley. Winds will continue gusting
this afternoon from the WNW-NW. As this surface low moves away...the
gradient will gradually slacken overnight.

Expecting skys to clear quickly by early evening. Winds will
continue to stay up which will preclude a rapid drop after sunset.
Used for min temperatures for tonight an equal blend of 12z
gridded MOS...mav/met. Mins will be well below normal.

Upslope snow conditions in the far western zones have eased. Mainly
flurries noted in dot cameras and other web images. Kept flurries
in the forecast for the far western zn ridge lines.

For Monday...westerly winds and warmer temperatures expected under
mostly sunny skies.

&&

Short term /Monday night/...
ridge of high pressure moves offshore Monday night as low pressure
moves into the middle Mississippi River valley. Light southerly flow
on the backside of the high center will help provide warmer
overnight temperatures...with values close to normal. In addition to the
southerly flow...increasing cloud cover with an upper level
shortwave will hinder maximum radiational cooling.

Some light wintry precipitation is possible...mainly west of the Blue
Ridge as an upper level disturbance moves through the region. At
this time...upper level and surface temperatures will be cold enough for
snow.

&&

Long term /Tuesday through Sunday/...
zonal flow aloft will allow for another fast moving shortwave to
move through the County warning forecast area Tuesday. Increasing cloud cover...and very
light precipitation is possible across the region.

High pressure briefly builds in for Wednesday night...but moves
offshore by early Thursday. A cold front is expected to impact the
area later on Thursday. High pressure builds in behind the cold
front...but upslope precipitation on the western ridges may continue into
Saturday. High pressure returns for Sunday.

&&

Aviation /19z Sunday through Friday/...
strong west-northwest winds will gradually diminish the rest of this PM into
this evening as high pressure builds in from the west. Expect VFR
conditions at all airports through Monday morning. Broken sky
conditions will become scattered then clear with ceilings remaining around
4 to 5 k feet late this afternoon and tonight with any cloud cover.
Winds are expected to become gusty from the west once again later
Monday morning into Monday afternoon, but not nearly as strong as
Sunday. Visibility will remain about 6 miles with no restrictions
through Monday morning.

Light precipitation is possible late Monday night into early Wednesday as
several upper level disturbances move through the middle Atlantic. A
cold front is expected on Thursday...brining more widespread
precipitation and a wind shift to the northwest.

&&

Marine...
strong small craft conditions for the remainder afternoon with
gusts to around 30 kts. Then as the pressure gradient eased towards
evening winds will slacken. Will continue with Small Craft Advisory through Monday
around noon...although northern portion of the tidal potomace could see
wind gusts fall below Small Craft Advisory by middle morning.

Small craft conditions are possible Thursday night into Friday as
a cold front moves across the region.

&&

Lwx watches/warnings/advisories...
District of Columbia...none.
Maryland...none.
Virginia...none.
WV...none.
Marine...Small Craft Advisory until 1 PM EST Monday for anz530>543.
