NWS Forecaster Discussion

Southcentral and southwest Alaska forecast discussion
National Weather Service Anchorage Alaska
446 am akst Friday Feb 12 2016

Analysis and upper levels...
two main areas of surface low pressure are over our region
tonight. A moderate surface low is working its way north into the
eastern Gulf of Alaska and another large strong low is south of
the Aleutians. Between these two main lows is an area of multiple
weaker lows near Kodiak Island and south of the Alaska Peninsula.
This is supported by an upper level low over the Gulf and another
upper center south of the Aleutians. The low pushing into the
eastern Gulf is pushing a front toward the north Gulf Coast with
gale force winds in advance of it already impacting the region
near Middleton Island. This system and front are weakening and
thus the gale force winds will subside this afternoon. A weak
upper trough is over Kodiak Island and another trough extends
across the Kilbuck Mountains. The trough over Kodiak Island is
moving north to the Aleutian mountains. Showers are evident along
the Aleutian mountains on the King Salmon radar. The trough across
the Kilbuck Mountains is elongating and weakening and moving west
into the Bering Sea and along the north side of the Alaska
Peninsula. Between these two troughs...clearing aloft has
resulted in some low cloud formation due to the radiational
cooling. The remnants of a low is moving west into the central to
western Bering Sea. A deformation zone is evident in the satellite
imagery from Saint Paul west. Low clouds and fog have moved over
the Pribilof Islands and should remain in the region through the
day. The large low south of the Aleutians will continue to move
east-northeast as the associated front moves northeast. A frontal
low has formed south of Unalaska Island. Multiple weak low
pressure centers will span from the main low south of the western
Aleutians to weak lows south of the Alaska Peninsula through the
weekend.

Model discussion...

Models are in overall good agreement with the synoptic pattern
through Sunday. The models are in good agreement in the short term
with the movement of the trough across the southern and southwest
Mainland today. The NAM and Canadian models resolve the
precipitation better across southcentral Alaska recognizing less
precipitation on the Lee side of the mountains today. The models
have aligned well with the solutions for the low and front south
of and along the Aleutians.

&&

Short term forecast southcentral Alaska (days 1 and 2)...
with the broad area of low pressure out west multiple low centers
will rotate around the main trough and north through the Gulf
towards the southcentral. This is a similar pattern to the last
couple days and more precipitation is expected. Temperatures will
remain well above normals which will result in much of the
precipitation falling as rain and as each upper level wave
rotates through the area there is a chance for some of the
precipitation to make it past the coastal ranges. This morning
there is concern for that scenario as temperatures around
Anchorage and into the Matanuska Valley are around or below
freezing. This could result in light freezing rain in the morning
hours.

&&

Short term forecast southwest Alaska (days 1 and 2)...
a weak deformation band which brought some light snow to parts of
the southwest Mainland overnight has started to dissipate over
the Kuskokwim Delta and track off to the northwest this morning.
Further to the east most areas of Bristol Bay should remain dry
with downsloping off of the Alaska/Aleutian ranges. A series of
lows from the North Pacific will begin to work their way into the
Alaska Peninsula starting tonight...with the second and stronger
system approaching the akpen come Saturday morning. Wet and windy
conditions will accompany these systems as they approach the
Bristol Bay area...with especially stronger winds along the gaps
of the Aleutian/alaskan ranges Saturday.

&&

Short term forecast Bering Sea/Aleutians (days 1 and 2)...
broad easterly flow over the Bering will keep weather throughout
much of the area quiet through Saturday. A front associated with a
North Pacific low approaching the akpen will then clip the
eastern Aleutians/akpen Saturday...bringing some gale-force winds
through Shelikof Strait and along the Pacific side of the akpen.

&&

Long term forecast (days 3 through 7)...

The broad and complex low encompassing much of the eastern
Bering/North Pacific/southwest coastal regions will spin
disturbances from the North Pacific through the Gulf and into
southern Alaska Sunday into early Monday.

A pattern change begins to take place Monday into middle-week as a
stronger low pressure system entering the western Bering parallel
to the Kamchatka coast pumps up and pushes a transient upper ridge
east across the Aleutian chain toward the southern Alaska
Mainland. This will bring a brief period of tranquil weather to
the region for the early part of next week. However...a triple
point low looks to form in the central Bering along the
associated front of the western Bering low Tuesday...then forms a
tertiary low potentially in the western Gulf by Wednesday or
Thursday of next week.

Temperatures look to remain above normal for southern Alaska for
mid-February...but not as warm as this week with the periods of
compressional warming from downslope flow.
