Nowcast

  • Now as of 6:24 am PST on January 29, 2015

Locally dense fog will continue to shroud portions of eastern Washington from the West Plains and northern sections the Spokane area west to the Waterville Plateau through mid-morning. Dense fog will also extend along the i90 corridor from the Spokane Airport south to Ritzville. Below freezing temperatures combined with moisture from the fog could produce locally icy conditions especially on lesser traveled roads and sidewalks. Motorists should allow some extra time to reach their destinations this morning due to the restricted visibilities and locally icy conditions.

NWS Forecaster Discussion

Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service Spokane Washington
354 am PST Thursday Jan 29 2015

Synopsis...
areas of low clouds and fog will persist across portions of
inland northwest as high pressure remains in place. The ridge of
high pressure will begin breaking down Sunday. The next best
threat of precipitation, including possible rain and snow, arrives
then and continues into at least early next week.

&&

Discussion...
today through Friday...and the ridge influence continues. What
does this mean...well generally more of the same, fog and low clouds
choking the valleys...and generally clear skies over the
mountains. Model guidance is quite consistent in keeping the
atmosphere very stable and quite saturated below 3-3.5k feet
through the entire period. About the only feature of consequence
during this period will be the weak upper level shortwave trough
currently moving toward Astoria. Model placement with this feature
is good compared to water vapor imagery with all taking it into
the Cascades by late morning and then over the basin during the
afternoon. During the features eastward progression...it will
weaken steadily...with very little if any ascent forecast ahead of
it. Suspect the main impact will be some increasing clouds over
the mountains with the low clouds remaining intact in the valleys.
Previously model solutions and forecasts were showing either some
very light seeder-feeder precipitation falling out of the mid-
level clouds and into the low stratus, but the latest runs are
showing nothing. Considering there is nothing showing up currently
on the radar mosaics west of the Cascades that notion seems
plausible. Now onto the problems associated with the low-level
stratus.

Yesterday at this time...the stratus was fairly
widespread...similar to this morning. The difference is the cloud
bases over the western basin...Wenatchee area...and Okanogan
Valley were considerably lower than they are this morning. Not
sure they will lower anytime soon given a stronger north-northeast
wind field. This should minimize the fog and drizzle threat for
these locations. Farther east...the fog is once again quite
prevalent around the Spokane/Coeur D'Alene area as well as the
western Columbia Basin...however here too the winds were a little
stronger than yesterday morning. All things being equal this
should keep the dense fog from becoming widespread...at least
through the morning. Drizzle chances also should be much smaller
than yesterday as the lifting through the saturated boundary layer
looks much weaker than yesterday. It looks like the offshore
gradient will weaken late this afternoon/evening...which should
set US up nicely for another round of fog tonight and on Friday.
Fx

Friday night and saturday: the inland northwest remains in a northwest
flow between an offshore ridge and a trough over the interior
United States. A shortwave slips by the northern rockies in this
flow. However the threat of significant measurable precipitation
from that feature remains low as the brunt of it stays east of the
Idaho/Montana border. With that said the the lowest 2000 to 4000 feet of
the atmosphere remains rather moist under a strong subsidence
inversion. This will hold the low clouds and fog threat in place.
A modest west-northwest flow near the top of the aforementioned
moist layer will provide reasonable lift to bring some drizzle to
the valley and basin areas. If there are any areas that appear
would have a better threat of drizzle it is in the rising terrain
ringing the Columbia Basin, especially from around Ritzville east
toward the Spokane/c'da area south into the Palouse.

Saturday night through wednesday: the region transitions to a
wetter pattern. The catalyst system, a organized frontal wave,
makes its way in with a subtropical moisture tap Sunday.
Strengthening isentropic ascent with the leading warm front and
that deepening moisture will lead to increasing precipitation
chances. Some of that lift/moisture combo starts into the Cascades
and northern mountains Saturday night, but the stronger threat of
precipitation comes in Sunday and Sunday night. Between Monday and
Wednesday the regions remains in a more progressive pattern, with
the passage of occasional shortwaves and continued precipitation
threat. However in the flow pattern the highest threat will be in
the windward facing slopes, I.E. The Cascade crest and the
northeast Washington and Idaho Panhandle mountains. /J cote'

&&

Aviation...
06z tafs: widespread stratus continues through the next 24 hours
over the western Columbia Basin...east slopes of the
Cascades...and northern valleys. Fog quickly developed in the kgeg
to kcoe areas along with klws overnight due to evening clearing.
In the last hour the fog has started to lift to a stratus deck at
kcoe and ksff and this trend is expected to continue through much
of the day. IFR/MVFR conditions persist through at least midday
before some clearing could once again be noted in the late
afternoon/evening. Similar trends are expected for kgeg and klws
with fog expected to rise to stratus through the morning/early
afternoon. Kpuw stands the best chance to remain at VFR with east
winds keeping fog/stratus at Bay through much of the day. This
evening brings more uncertainty as to whether fog will once again
develop or if the stratus persists throughout the day limiting
fog. The wild card will be how much clearing each location
experiences. Currently only have kmwh remaining stratus with all
other sites seeing the return of fog once again tonight due to
some level of clearing. /Fliehman
